You can work through the possibilities:

1) Battery itself - very unlikely.

2) Battery pack connector - possible - if you have any lights or
indicators, do they go dim or out at the same time?

3) Internal wiring - unlikely.

4) Controller - possible - is there any pattern at all? Any
circumstances when it is more likely to happen?

5) Controls - unlikely - you presumable give them a good waggle about
trying to get it to do something, when this happens.

6) Controller contacts - possible.

7) Motor - possible - especially if it has just been working hard for
some time.

8) Motor contacts - possible.

If all the lights and everything stops working at the same time, I'd go
for (2). Either the external battery pack connector or the one inside
the pack, connecting the battery. Very easy to fix when the problem
starts - but it is one that will only get worse and a lot more expensive
to fix, if left unfixed.

If there is a pattern, eg, always after a steep climb, if the time is
always near enough 40 seconds and not sometimes just 5 or so, if other
things still work at the same time - then I'm afraid that it looks like
being (4). eg, a thermal protection device taking time to reset itself.
On the plus side - at least it should be consistent and take the same
40 seconds or so to recover, each and every time it happens, including
in the immediate future..
