I suspect the OP is actually getting SSDI rather than SSI. Should it
turn out he is on SSI even giving the land to a relative won't help
him as land transfers are recorded and the social workers know and
watch for such things. Selling it to the relative for no more half
what his family member originally bought it for or turning it over to
satisfy the lien and reporting the sale / transfer to his social
worker is about the only safe thing to do. That way he can safely
argue it was family land that he never took possession of that had
nothing but sentimental value to him because it was family property.
This will only work if the original price was under $2000 and or he
paid no more than that for the property when he bought it from his
relative. In case he is getting SSI not divulging ownership on his
original application works against him.
